General Provisions

Products manufactured and sold in the mainland must comply with the Regulations on the Marking and Labelling of Products. Under these regulations, the product name, name and address of manufacturer, date of manufacture, and the best before date or expiry date of the product must be marked on the product or its packaging using words, symbols, numbers and graphics. The product marking must be clear, lasting and easily identifiable.


6.1.1  Official Written Language

According to the Regulations on the Marking and Labelling of Products, standard Chinese is the language used for product labelling. While Chinese pin-yin or a foreign language can be used at the same time, the font size of the Chinese pin-yin and the foreign language must be smaller than that of the standard Chinese. The Chinese characters, numbers and letters used in product labelling must not be less than 1.8 mm in height.


6.1.2  Mandatory Information on Packaging

Product Name

The product name must reflect the true characteristics of the product and must comply with the following requirements: (1) for products whose names are regulated by national standards or industry standards, the names stipulated in the national standards or industry standards should be used; (2) for products whose names are not

regulated by national standards or industry standards, common names or generic names not causing misunderstanding or confusion to the users or consumers should be used; (3) when "unique names" or "trademark names" are used, one of the names specified in (1) or (2) above must be used prominently at the same time in the same position.

Name and Address of Manufacturer

The name and address of the manufacturer should be the name and address of a legally registered manufacturer liable for product quality. For imported products, the name and address of the original manufacturer are not mandatory but the place (country or region) of origin as well as the agent, importer or distributor's name and address legally registered in China have to be given. The place of origin must comply with the Provisional Regulations of the Customs of the PRC on the Place of Origin of Import Goods.

Date of Manufacture and Best Before Date or Expiry Date

For products subject to expiration, the date of manufacture and best before date or expiry date must be marked. The expression of the date must comply with the stipulations in the relevant national standard or in the order of "year, month, day".

Place of Manufacture

The place of manufacture of the product should be marked in accordance with the regional rules of the respective administrative regions.

Other Markings

Product labels should bear valid product bar code.

Products manufactured and sold in the mainland should indicate the codes of the national standard, industry standard, local standard or enterprise standard adopted by the enterprise, and be affixed with a product quality certification.

Products subject to production licensing management should indicate its valid production licensing mark and number.

Products granted quality certification may show their certification mark on the products manufactured during the valid certification period. Products granted quality claim or quality mark recognised by the state may show the quality claim or quality mark on the products, but must indicate clearly the award date and the validity period.

According to the features and use of the product, its specifications, grade, quantity, net content, names and content of major ingredients, as well as other technical requirements must be shown. The marking of the net content must comply with the requirements set out in the Regulations on the Supervision of the Measurements of Pre-packaged Products.

Products that may be damaged easily or cause danger to human health and safety or property loss due to improper use must bear a warning sign or warning statement in Chinese. For products that are poisonous, radioactive, dangerous, fragile or requiring special treatment such as "handle with care", "keep in a dry place" and "this side up", their packaging must comply with the requirements stipulated in laws, regulations and contract terms and must bear a warning sign or warning statement in Chinese and indicate points to note in the course of transportation.

Products with complicated features, structures and method of use and products that are difficult to install and use must come with detailed instructions for installation, maintenance and use in accordance with the regulations in the relevant national standard, industry standard and local standard for the product.

For products or product sale packaging with a maximum surface area of less than 10 cm2, they are allowed to just bear the product name and name of manufacturer on the product or product sale packaging. For products with a limited period of use, the date of manufacture and best before date or expiry date must also be indicated on the product or product packaging. The content of other markings can be shown on other surfaces of the product.
