Smart Locker Service Set to Transform Taiwan's E-commerce Sector

Operating from 641 locations across the territory, the lockers are said to be a boon to consumers and retailers alike.

Early last month, Taiwan's Palm Box Digital announced the launch of its range of Smart Lockers, a self-pickup and delivery service that will operate from 641 locations across the territory. The company has launched the service in association with a number of Taiwan's leading logistics companies and payment platforms, including Hi-Life, Simple Mart, Tokyo Property Management, Kaohsiung Rapid Transit, Easy Card, Line Pay, SF Express (Taiwan), Pelican Express and Kerry TJ Logistics.

According to Tsai Kai-chun, the President of Palm Box Digital, the company's lockers will provide a completely new pickup and drop-off service for customers throughout Taiwan. A delivery can be requested simply by downloading the Palm Box Smart Locker app and filling in the required information. The drop-off process can then be completed by entering a delivery code and paying the required fee at a Smart Locker location. In terms of collection, the intended recipient can pick up their delivery by entering the required code on the designated Smart Locker, following receipt of a message notifying them of the access code.

For retail outlets, the availability of an onsite Smart Locker reduces the time needed to process orders. In the case of consumers, collecting their deliveries at a designated supermarket or other delivery point can both reduce their waiting time and speed up the actual pick-up process. Additionally, the service ensures privacy and security for consumers, freeing them from the risks associated with having to disclose personal information, including home addresses.

At present, Taiwan's e-commerce sector has a daily order volume in excess of two million units. On top of this, the territory's logistics industry typically has had to contend with some 10-20% of failed first-time door-to-door delivery journeys. It is hoped that the Smart Lockers will reduce this number of wasted journeys, while giving consumers greater flexibility in terms of delivery times and locations.
