General Introduction

Baotou is the largest industrial city in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. As Baotou is rich in mineral resources, especially in metal minerals, it is dubbed the “rare earth capital in China”.

Baotou has an effective transportation network and is designated as a regional hub in MOFCOM’s development plan (2015-2020) of distributive trade and logistics. Baotou airport offers flights to many cities in China. A number of railways and highways including Baotou to Lanzhou and Beijing to Baotou railways intersect in the city.

Baotou is the second largest economy of the Autonomous Region. The industrial sector is the largest contributor to the city’s economy which made up 43% of the GDP in 2015. The city's five pillar industries are iron and steel, aluminum, equipment manufacturing, electricity and rare earth. Additionally, new industries such as stainless steel, aluminum deep processing, heavy trucks manufacturing and wind power equipment-manufacturing have developed rapidly in the city.
