Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture is located in the northern part of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Changji is rich in solar energy. It is also replete with oil and natural gas resources. There are four oilfields under construction.
Transportation in Changji mainly relies on highways. State Highway 312 (which runs from Shanghai to Yining), State Highway 216 (which runs from Altay to Baluntai) and the Urumqi-Tulufan Expressway run through the prefecture.
The agricultural sector has a significant contribution to the city’s economy, comprising 22% of the GDP in 2015. Major products are grain and vegetable such as tomato.
Industry is the main economic driver to the city, accounting for 38% of the GDP in 2015. Pillar industries include Petroleum and natural gas mining, coal chemicals, non-ferrous metal smelting, food processing, textiles, machinery and building materials.
