Handan, lying in the southern part of the Hebei Province, is situated at the intersection of Hebei, Shandong, Shanxi and Henan Provinces.
Handan is an important transportation hub in north China, it is designated as a regional hub in MOFCOM’s development plan (2015-2020) of distributive trade and logistics. Highways and railways to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou intersect in Handan. Handan International Airport, 11km from the city’s downtown, offers scheduled domestic flights to other major cities.
Handan Vocational Technical College, formerly Handan University, is listed as an associated centre of UNESCO's APEID (Asia-Pacific Program of Educational Innovation for Development).
The industry sector accounted for 42% of the GDP in 2015. Two major industries in the city are steel products manufacturing and coal mining and supplying.
Handan Steel, Jizhong Energy Fengfeng Group, Hebei Wenfeng Iron and Steel, Handan Coal and Xinjin Steel are examples of major enterprises in the city.
