Jiaxing lies in the northern part of the Zhejiang province and serves as the juncture of the Hangzhou-Shanghai Railway and Shanghai-Hangzhou Highway. Although Jiaxing does not have its own airport, the city is within the 1.5 hour circle of three major international airports in the Yangtze River Delta, namely Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport.
Jiaxing ranked as the 37th most competitive city in China according to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 2016.
Industry is the main economic driver to the city’s economy, contributing 47% to its GDP in 2015. Pillar industries in Jiaxing include printing, textile, leather, electricity supply and chemicals. Jiaxing is known as the "home of silk", indicating the significance of textile manufacturing. It is also the world's largest exporter of leather goods. Haining in Jiaxing is famed for being the "home of leather" in China.
Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, China's first self-designed nuclear power station, is set up in Jiaxing. The city has become an important energy base in East China.
Tourism is a pillar industry of Jiaxing’s service sector. Major attractions are South Lake and Nanbei Lake.
