Jinchang is located in the middle of the Gansu Province. Jinchang is an important agricultural base, particularly for grain and oil plants. Due to its special climate, beet, watermelon, sunflower seeds, black melon seeds grow well and boast high quality.
Jinchang is also rich in mineral resources. Proven reserves of nickel ore rank first throughout China, while reserves of copper contribute 80% to the province's total.
Jinchang has a large industry sector that accounted for 45% of the GDP in 2015. Pillar industries of the city include metallurgy, chemicals and building materials. Major production is nickel products.
Leading enterprises include Jinchuan Group Limited (JNMC), the largest producer of nickel and cobalt in China.
