General Introduction

Jiuquan, located in the northwest of the Gansu Province, is designated as a regional hub in MOFCOM’s development plan (2015-2020) of distributive trade and logistics.

Jiuquan is a major stop on the ancient "Silk Road" and famous for the Dunhuang caves and arts. It is also a famous satellite launch centre and clean energy production base in China.

Jiuquan has a rather big agricultural sector which is famous for its cotton, melons and vegetables.

Jiuquan is also famous for its wind power and solar power resources. In 2012, the first phase of the Gansu Wind Farm Project in Jiuquan (one of the mega wind power projects approved by the Chinese government) was completed with an installed capacity of 6,000MW. The entire project with a total capacity of 20,000MW is expected to be completed in 2020.

New energy, metallurgy, agricultural products processing and construction materials are pillar industries of Jiuquan. The industry sector accounted for 25% of the GDP in 2015.

Jiuquan has a large service sector due mainly to its tourism industry. Jiuquan received the largest number of international tourists among all cities in Gansu. In 2015, some 22,500 overseas visitors visited Jiuquan, which was 29% higher than that of Lanzhou, the second largest tourist destinaton in Gansu.
