Kunming, capital of the Yunnan province, is located in the eastern part of the province. It is the centre of Yunnan's politics, economics and culture.
Kunming is the transportation hub of Yunnan, and is designated as a national hub in MOFCOM’s development plan (2015-2020) of distributive trade and logistics. Highways and railways, including Chengdu-Kunming Railway, Kunming-Nanning Railway and Kunming-Guiyang Railway, connect the city with other major cities in China. Kunming Changshui International Airport offers regular flights to major cities domestically and internationally.
Industry accounted for 26% of the GDP in 2015. Major industries include tobacco, metallurgy, mechanical and electronic integration, and pharmaceuticals.
The service sector is the largest economic contributor to Kunming, accounting for 55% of its GDP in 2015. Tourism is the most important pillar of the service sector. Dianchi Lake and the stone forest are key tourist attractions of Kunming.
