Qingyang is located in the eastern part of the Gansu Province, bordering Shaanxi Province and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
Qingyang is rich in natural resources, particularly oil, making the city an important natural gas and petroleum production base of Gansu Province. In addition, reserves of coal contributed 96% to the province's total.
In 2015, the industry sector, the largest contributor to the city's economy, accounted for 48% of the GDP. Petrochemical, food processing, building material and pharmaceutical are the pillar industries of the city. Major investors include Changqing Oilfield Second Production Factory, Tongda Juice Co, Qilian Mountain Cement Co and Xifeng Pharmaceutical Factory.
