Tacheng Prefecture is located in the northern part of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is one of the major land port adjacent to the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Tacheng is rich in natural resources, such as oil, natural gas, iron ore, chromite, gold and coal deposits. The city's chromite deposit is the second largest in China.
Transportation in Tacheng is convenient. Apart from highways and railways, Tacheng Airport has daily flights to Urumqi.
Major economic sectors in Tacheng include animal husbandry, tomato planting, and industries such as cotton and textile processing, green food processing, sugar and oil production, coal mining.
To develop border trade and export processing targeting the central Asia market, a border economic co-operation zone is established in Tacheng.
