Wuwei is located in the middle part of the Gansu province. As it is well-known for the abundant production of wine, it is dubbed the ‘city of wine’ and ‘hometown of wine in China’.
Transportation is convenient. State Highway 312, the Lianyungang-Korgas Expressway, the Lanzhou-Urumqi Railway, and the Gantang-Wuwei Railway run through the city.
Agriculture plays a significant role in Wuwei. Its production of wheat and corn has also contributed to development of its pillar industries, i.e. brewing industry and corn starch processing.
The industry sector accounted for 23% of the GDP in 2015. Major productions include wine and beer, both ranking first in Gansu Province.
Wuwei is also rich in mineral resources. Domestic large-scale mines include ilmenite and graphite.
