Baiyin is located in the middle part of the Gansu Province, at the upper reaches of the Yellow River. The city was given its name after its prosperous silver mining business dating back to the Ming Dynasty.
Baiyin is easily accessible by a number of highways and railways. The city is connected with Lanzhou, the capital city of Gansu Province, by a 69 km expressway.
Baiyin is an important production base of non-ferrous metals in China. Apart from silver, Baiyin also has rich reserves of other non-ferrous metals such as copper, lead, aluminum, zinc and gold.
Baiyin is also an important energy and chemical industry base of the Gansu province. The four main industries, namely non-ferrous metal processing, coal mining, chemicals and electricity, together accounted for about 75% of the city’s industrial value-added output. The whole industry sector accounted for 33% of the GDP in 2015.
