Datong is located in the northern part of the Shanxi Province. The city is designated as a regional hub in MOFCOM’s development plan (2015-2020) of distributive trade and logistics. A network of highways and railways links Datong with other major cities in China. Datong Yungang Airport offers regular flights to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Changzhi.
Datong has rich coal and coal bed gas reserves, as well as graphite, lime and kaolin resources.
The industry sector accounted for 35% of the GDP in 2015. Due to its rich coal resources, the city has become one of the largest coal production hubs in China. Shanghai-listed Datong Coal Mine Group is the third largest state owned coal miner in China.
Other major industries in the city include electricity production and supply, nonferrous metal products, construction materials, equipment manufacturing, and textiles.
