Dehong Autonomous Prefecture is located in the western part of the Yunnan Province, bordering Myamnar. Its counties including Mangshi and Ruili are the major transportation hubs and trading hubs within the Greater Mekong Sub-region.
Transportation in Dehong mainly relies on highways and airlines. There are scheduled buses running between Dehong and nearby cities. Mangshi Airport offers regular flights to other major cities in China, such as Kunming, Chengdu, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
The service sector is the largest economic contributor to Dehong, accounting for 50% of the GDP in 2015. Tourism and trade are the two most important pillars of the service sector. Major tourist attractions include Zhaduo Buddha Footprint Scenery Area, Luchuan Ancient Town and the border trade town in Ruili.
Dehong was a major hub on the ancient Southern Silk Road. In 2010, Ruili, a major border trade centre with Myanmar, was assigned as a major pilot liberalisation and development zone by the State Council, and was position as a strategy hub to increase cooperation with the Greater Mekong Sub-region.
