Erenhot, located in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, has an area of 4015.1 sq km and a population of about 0.07 million. It is the largest land port city on the Sino-Mongolian border.
The city is located in a semi-arid temperate zone. It has long, cold winters and short, hot summers. The daily and annual mean air temperature differences within the city reach 20 and 80 degrees Celsius respectively.

In 2009, Erenhot realized GDP of RMB 4 billion, up 21.3% year on year. Within this figure, the value-added output of the secondary and service industries amounted to RMB 1.3 billion and RMB 2.6 billion, up 28.4% and 18.9% year on year respectively. Border trade, tourism, processing and services have been the four pillar businesses of the city. . Within the same year, Erenhot attracted 1.1 million tourists. The domestic tourist and foreign exchange revenue amounted to RMB 1.9 million and US$201 million, down 1.1% and 6.9% respectively.
The total import and export of Erenhot amounted to US$2.4 billion in 2009, down 10.6% year on year. It accounted for 35.5 % of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region's total. Russia and Mongolia are major trade partners of the city.

Erenhot is not only a flourishing land port in North China with a multinational culture. It was also one of the first places in Asia to discover dinosaur fossils and eggs. As such, it has been dubbed "the hometown of dinosaurs".

Erenhot is rich in tourism resources such as the Mere Stone and the Dinosaur Museum. Zamyn-Uud, the largest land port city in the People's Republic of Mongolia, is only 9 km from Erenhot. Foreign citizens are able to enter the city freely with their passports or ID cards.
Erenhot’s Mongolian-style cuisine includes tasty dishes such as roasted whole sheep, grilled meat, milk tea and milk bean curd.
