Foshan is the third largest city in terms of GDP in Guangdong Province. It is famous for its private enterprises and ranked the 11th most competitive city in China in 2016 according to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
Foshan is designated as a regional hub in MOFCOM’s development plan (2015-2020) of distributive trade and logistics. It is accessible by the Guangzhou-Zhuhai Highway, Guangzhou-Zhanjiang Highway, Guangzhou-Foshan Highway and Guangzhou-Zhaoqing Highway. Moreover, to promote integrated development of Foshan and Guangzhou (provincial capital), urban planning and infrastructure development of the two cities are well integrated. For example, Foshan and Guangzhou are linked together by the subway transportation network.
Industry sector is the largest contributor to Foshan’s economy, accounting for 58% of its GDP in 2015. The pillar industries in the city are equipment manufacturing, metallurgy, chemicals and petrochemicals, plastic products-manufacturing and electronics.
Foshan is also an important production base of home appliances in China. Leading home appliance enterprises including Midea, Macro, Kelon and Glanz, have set up their headquarters in the city.
