General Introduction

Haikou is the capital city of the Hainan province located in the northern coast of the Hainan Island. Due to its tropical climate, Haikou is dubbed the “coconut city”.

Haikou is designated as a national hub in MOFCOM’s development plan (2015-2020) of distributive trade and logistics. Haikou Meilan International Airport is China's nineteenth largest airport and Haikou Xiuying Port is linked with Guangdong’s Xuwen County by a special train. Trains from Guangdong to Haikou, or vice versa, are divided into several segments and loaded onto ferries for transferring across the strait.

Haikou’s agricultural sector is characterised by the production of tropical fruits and plants. Major commercial crops include rubber, coffee, sugar cane and pepper corn.

Automobile accounts for about 30% of Haikou’s industrial output. A leading manufacturer is Haima Motor, a subsidiary of First Auto Works. Other major industries include chemical, electrical machinery, pharmaceutical and food processing.

Haikou has a big service sector, in which tourism is the most important industry.
