Heyuan lies in the middle and upper reaches of the East River in the northeastern part of the Guangdong Province. It is accessible by the Beijing-Kowloon Railway and highways including State Highway 205, the Heyuan-Huizhou Highway and the Yuegan Highway.
Heyuan's economy is relatively small in the Guangdong Province, ranking 19th among the 21 prefecture level cities in Guangdong Province.
Heyuan has the two largest hydro-power stations in Guangdong and is rich in mineral resources. The industry sector, accounted for 41% of the GDP in 2015, comprises food and beverages, mining and metallurgy, equipment manufacturing, electronic appliances, textiles and garments, construction ceramics and pharmaceuticals.
Heyuan has developed a cluster of phone production. Large companies including CK Telecom, Kelixin Electronic Telecom and China Base Mobile have set up production lines in the city.
