Introduction
 

Honghe Autonomous Prefecture is located in the southern part of Yunnan Province. It covers an area of 32,900 sq km. Its population is 4.44 million.

Honghe has a typical subtropical plateau monsoon climate with plenty of rainfall. The average temperature is 15.1-22.6°C. The average annual precipitation totals 1,491 mm.  

Honghe is rich in mineral and water resources. Minerals such as tin, copper, zinc, tungsten, nickel and gold are abundant. Gejiu County, which is under the administration of Honghe, is appraised as the Tin Capital of China. Additionally, Honghe has 17 mid-sized and 384 small reservoirs with theoretical reserves of hydro energy amounting to 3.6 million kw. 

Transportation in Honghe is very convenient. State Highway 326 runs through the prefecture and extends to Guizhou Province and Chongqing Municipality. In addition, Yunnan-Vietnam Railway also traverses the prefecture, making Honghe an important gateway to the ASEAN member nations.
 
Economic Features
 
Honghe realized GDP of RMB 65 billion in 2010, representing a rise of 11% year on year. The prefecture's GDP accounted for approximately 11% of Yunnan's total.

The agricultural sector, the smallest contributor to the prefecture's economy, generated value-added output of RMB 10.4 billion in 2010, accounting for 16% of the prefecture's GDP. Total output value of the sector amounted to RMB 17.39 billion, up 5.8% year on year.

Secondary industry (industry and construction), the largest contributor to the prefecture's economy, realized value-added output of RMB 34.5 billion, accounting for 53.1% of the prefecture's total.

The industrial sector realized total industrial output of RMB 85.3 billion, up 13.1% year on year, while industrial output of enterprises with designated size or above increased by 12.6% to RMB 69.39 billion, contributing 81.3% to the industrial sector's total. Heavy and light industrial enterprises with designated size or above realized value-added industrial output of RMB 15.66 billion and RMB 10.9 billion, up 12% and 7% year on year, respectively.

Tobacco, electricity, chemicals, biological resources, metallurgy and building materials are the pillar industries of Honghe. Honghe Tobacco Factory, located in Mile County, owns the famous tobacco brand "Honghe".

The service sector generated value-added output of RMB 20.08 billion, accounting for 30.9% of the prefecture's total GDP in 2010. 

Hekou Border Ports, one of the most active Sino-Vietnamese border ports in Yunnan, is located in Honghe. The foreign trade value of the prefecture amounted to US$1.1 billion in 2010, with an increase of 30.3% over the previous year. Major export goods are chemicals, agricultural products, and coal, while major import goods include iron ore and rubber products. Vietnam is the most important trading partner of the prefecture.

Tourism is also important for the prefecture. During 2010, 12.14 million tourists visited the prefecture, up 10.8% year on year, while tourism income totaled RMB 6.9 billion, representing a rise of 19.4% compared to the previous year. 
 
Cultural Highlights
 

Honghe is a multi-cultural prefecture with many ethnic minority groups, including the Hani, the Miao, the Yi, and the Dai. Minority ethnic groups account for approximately 57% the prefecture's total population.

Folk arts, including Hani Production Tune, Hani counterpoint, Yi Yanhe (Tobacco Box) Dance, and Yi Haicai Tune are officially recognized as part of the state-level intangible cultural heritage.

Honghe is also appraised as the Town of Roasted Tobacco because the tobacco brand "Honghe" was named after the prefecture.
 
Tourist Attraction
 

Popular tourist attractions in Honghe include Alugu Cave Scenery Area, Gejiu-Town of Tin, the Hani rice terraces, Jianshui Zhilin Temple, Jianshui Swallow Cave, Dawei Mountain, Fenshui Ridge, Huanglian Mountain State-level Natural Reserve, and Shiping Yilong Lake.

Alugu Cave Scenery Area was rated as an AAAA level scenery spot, the second highest level in China, in 2002.

Honghe is also famous for snacks of Hani Lobster Source, Mengzi Guoqiao Rice Noodle, Shiping Bean Curd, and folk craftworks of Gejiu Tin Craftworks and Jianshui Purple Pottery, which is one of the four most famous Potteries in China.
