Huainan is located in the north central region of the Anhui Province, at the middle reaches of the River Huai.
Transportation in Huainan is supported by a convenient railway and highway network. The new Beijing-Fuzhou Express Railway stops at the city.
Huainan is rich in coal resources. It has one of the largest coal reserves in East Asia, accounting for 32% of East China's total.
Industry accounted for 41% of the GDP in 2015. Major industries include coal mining and dressing, electricity production and supply, chemicals, and textiles.
Leading companies in Huainan include Huainan Mining Group, China Eastar Group, Datang Huainan Luohe Power Plant and Anhui Huainan Chemicals Group.
