Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture is located in the western part of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is rich in mineral resources such as beryllium, dolomite, potassium feldspar, chromium and cesium.
Ili is designated as a regional hub in MOFCOM’s development plan (2015-2020) of distributive trade and logistics. There are highways connecting Ili with Urumqi and the surrounding prefecture-level cities, which include Shihezi and Bortala. Yining Airport operates daily flights to Urumqi. There are eight national category-1 ports located in Ili.
Ili is the largest agricultural base in Xinjiang, contributing to the development of related industries such as sugar production, food processing and tobacco manufacturing. Other major industries include electricity, and ferrous metal smelting. The industry sector accounted for 19% of the GDP in 2015.
