Jiayuguan is located in the northwestern part of the Gansu province, at the southern foot of Heishan Mountain and at the northern foot of Qilianshan Mountain.
Transportation of Jiayuguan is convenient. Highways and railways run through the city. Jiayuguan Airport, 12 km from the city’s downtown, operates scheduled flights to Dunhuang, Lanzhou, Urumqi, and other cities.
Jiayuguan is an important iron ore production base in China. It is also rich in other mineral resources, such as manganese, copper, gold, limestone, clay and barite.
The industry sector is the largest contributor to the city’s economy, comprising 52% of the GDP in 2015. Ferrous metal smelting and rolling is the pillar industry in Jiayuguan, major productions include steel and pig iron. Major enterprises include the Jiayuguan based Jiuquan Iron & Steel (Group), a large-scale state owned enterprise group.
Tourism is an important pillar of the service sector. With a history of more than 600 years, Jiayuguan used to be an important pass on the ancient Silk Road. The ancient pass has been expanded into a modern city and become a major tourist attraction.
