Jinan is the provincial capital. It is also a regional hub reaching out to the Yangtze River Delta and Bohai Rim Region.
Jinan is designated as a national hub in MOFCOM’s development plan (2015-2020) of distributive trade and logistics. Three railways intersect in Jinan, namely, the Beijing-Shanghai Railway, Jinan-Qingdao Railway and Jinan-Handan Railway, making the city easily accessible. The Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport operates flights domestically and internationally.
Jinan ranked the 30th most competitive city in China according to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 2016.
Jinan has rich limestone resources and has an abundance of coal and iron.
Industry accounted for 30% of the GDP in 2015. Six pillar industries of Jinan include electronics, food processing and pharmaceuticals, machinery, petrochemicals, transportation equipment, and metallurgy. The China National Heavy Duty Truck Group (CNHDT or Sinotruk) based in Jinan is one of the largest heavy truck manufacturers in China.
Jinan has a fast growing modern service sector including finance, research, information technology and education. Inspur Group, one of the largest enterprises in the city's electronics and IT industry, has set up its headquarters in Jinan.
Tourism also has a significant contribution to Jinan’s economy. Major tourist attractions include the Baotu Spring Daming Lake and the Thousand Buddha Mountain.
