General Introduction

Lanzhou, capital of the Gansu Province, is a major stop on the new Eurasia landbridge that links China with Europe via Central Asia and West Asia.

Lanzhou is designated as a national hub in MOFCOM’s development plan (2015-2020) of distributive trade and logistics. It has a comprehensive transportation system of highways, railways and aviation. Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport operates regular flights to more than 40 cities domestically and internationally.

Though Lanzhou’s agricultural sector is relatively small, its production of a number of fruits, including melons, peaches and pears are famous. Lanzhou is also rich in mineral resources, such as black metals, valuable metals, rare earth and energy mines.

The industry sector accounted for 26% of the GDP in 2015. Pillar industries include non-metallic mineral products, electronics and communication equipment-manufacturing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, fine chemical products and food-processing.

Service is the largest economic sector given the importance of Lanzhou as a commercial and distribution hub in Gansu. Tourism is also a major industry in Lanzhou's service sector. In 2015, Lanzhou received over 17,400 overseas tourists, the second highest in Gansu.
