Located in the southeast of Heilongjiang Province, Mudanjiang borders Jilin Province to the south, neighbors Russia to the East and is adjacent to the Sea of Japan.
Mudanjiang has a temperate continental monsoon climate, with four distinct seasons and an annual average temperature of 4.5℃. Its weather is cool and rarely windy in spring and autumn.

In 2010, the city's GDP rose 18.5% to RMB 78.1 billion. The agricultural, secondary and service industry contributed RMB 12.48 billion, RMB 30.88 billion and RMB 34.73 billion, accounting for 16%, 39.5% and 44.5% of the city.
In 2010, the value-added industrial output of Mudanjiang reached RMB 13.34 billion, up 36.1% over 2009. Its pillar industries include the forest industry, accessory industry for automobiles, paper making, petrochemicals, new materials, medicine and energy.
Service industry is the largest contributor to the city's economic growth. Sales of consumer goods rose 19.3% to RMB 26.58 billion in 2010. Tourism industry has seen a rapidly growth in 2010. More than 8.7 million tourists have visited the city, up 15% year on year. Tourism revenue rose 15.2% to RMB 5.3 billion The foreign trade value increased 71.8% to US$9 billion in 2010, ranked first in Heilongjiang province. Export and import of the city amounted to US$4.01 billion and US$4.97 billion in 2010,respectively. There were 12 foreign investment projects approved in 2010, with a total investment of US$166 million. The utilized FDI rose 10.4% to US$123 million.

| Cultural Highlights |

Mudanjiang was the resident area of the Manchu people 2,300 years ago. In 1903, Russia built a train station for the Middle-East Railway in Mudanjiang, thus boosting local development.
Presently, cultural intercommunication activities are held each year between Mudanjiang and countries like Russia and South Korea.

The most famous scenic spot in Mudanjiang is Jingbo Lake, which is the only lava-dammed lake caused by volcanic eruption in China. Other sites include the National Forest Park and the Skee Field by Mudan Mountain, and the Breeding Center for the Siberian Tiger.
Besides hazel mushrooms and venison, the best local dishes also include lamb hotpot, fish feast and gluten cake. Most of them are derived from Dongbei or Korean culinary styles. The stewed dishes and the fish feast are among the most famous delights.
