Mudanjiang is located in the southeastern part of the Heilongjiang Province. With a 211km long border with Russia, Mudanjiang has a vibrant sector of border trade with Russia, particularly at Suifenhe.
Mudanjiang is designated as a regional hub in MOFCOM’s development plan (2015-2020) of distributive trade and logistics. Mudanjiang Hailang Airport, a national 4C-level airport, provides domestic and international flights. A number of railways and highways also link Mudanjiang with other major cities in China. Riding on the potential of land-sea transportation development between Mudanjiang and Vladivostok, Mudanjiang is envisioned to become a major land port on the Silk Road Economic Belt.
The industry sector accounted for 34% of the GDP in 2015. Major industries include the forestry industry, accessories for automobiles, paper making, petrochemicals, new materials, medicine and energy.
Tourism industry is an important industry in the service sector. Major attractions include the Jingbo Lake, the only lava dammed lake caused by volcanic eruption in China.
