Songyuan is located in the mid-western part of the Jilin Province at the intersection of the Jilin Province, Heilongjiang Province and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. A number of railways and highways connect the city with most major cities in China. An inland river port is being built at Songyuan.
Located in the southern part of Songnen Plain, Songyuan has a rather significant agricultural sector that made up 18% of the GDP in 2015. Songyuan is within China's Golden Corn Belt, and is an important commodity grain base in China.
Petroleum exploration is a major industry in Songyuan as the Jilin Oilfield, the sixth largest oilfield in China, is located in the city. Other major industries include agricultural and sideline products processing, wood processing, and chemicals. The industry sector accounted for 40% of the GDP in 2015.
