Turpan Prefecture is located in the middle part of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the Tianshan Basin.
Transportation mainly relies on highways and railways. State Highway 312 (Shanghai to Yining) and State Highway 314 (Urumqi to Khunjerab) intersect in Turpan. The Lanzhou-Urumqi Railway and the Urumqi-Kashgar Railway run through the city.
Turpan is rich in natural and mineral resources such as oil, natural gas, coal, gold, iron, copper, Glauber's salt, granite, potassium saltpeter, saltpeter sodium and boron soil. Turpan has the only potassium nitrate and sodium nitrate mineral resources in China.
Turpan has a significant agricultural sector, accounting for 22% of the GDP in 2015. Benefiting from the abundant sunshine condition, Turpan is famous for fruits, such as melons and grapes. Turpan is praised as the “Hometown of Grapes”.
The industry sector that accounted for 28% of the GDP in 2015. Major industries include oil and gas exploration, ferrous metal mining, coal mining, electricity, non-metal mining, and non-ferrous metals mining.
