Urumqi is Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region's capital. It is located at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountain and on the southern edge of the Junggar Basin. It is rich in natural resources such as oil, coal, rare mines, glaciers, forests, grasslands and wind energy.
Urumqi is designated as a national hub in MOFCOM’s development plan (2015-2020) of distributive trade and logistics. Urumqi Diwopu International Airport offers flights domestically and internationally. Urumqi is also linked by railways to six major domestic cities including Xi'an, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Zhengzhou and Lanzhou.
The industry sector contributed 24% to the GDP in 2015. Urumqi has seven pillar industries including oil processing, metallurgy, textiles, machinery, power industry, chemicals and food processing. The new energy industry (dealing primarily with wind power and solar energy, etc.) is one of the city's emerging key industries.
Service sector is the main economic driver to the city’s economy. Tourism and trade are important industries of the service sector. Urumqi used to be an important town of the ancient Silk Road which has now developed into a major trade and distribution centre for Central Asia.
