Xining, the capital city of Qinghai province, lies to the east of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau and the upper reaches of the Huangshui River.
Xining is designated as a national hub in MOFCOM’s development plan (2015-2020) of distributive trade and logistics. Two railways including the Lanzhou-Xining and the Xining-Lhasa connect Qinghai, Gansu and Tibet. Xining Caojiabao Airport operates flights to major domestic cities, such as Beijing, Guangzhou and Chengdu.
Xining is rich in mineral resources. Its reserves of potassium, magnesium, lithium, iodine, natural sulfur, silica and asbestos rank the first in China.
Industry accounted for 39% of the GDP in 2015. Major industries include machinery, textiles, chemicals, building materials, metallurgy and leather and food processing. Major products are cements, iron and steel and primary aluminum.
Tourism is an important pillar to Xining. Xining used to be an important pass on the ancient Silk Road. The ancient pass has been expanded into a modern city and become a major tourist attraction. Other tourism attractions include Ta'er Monastery, Dongguan Mosque, Riyue (Sun and Moon) Mountain, Bird Island and Qinghai Lake.
