Zhangjiajie is situated in the northwestern part of the Hunan Province. It has a convenient highways network, and the Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport, located 40 km from Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, operates daily domestic flights to cities including Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Xi'an.
The service sector, in particular tourism, dominates the city’s economy. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, is the most popular tourist attraction in Hunan.
Zhangjiajie has a rather small industry sector that accounted for 19% of the GDP in 2015. Coal mining, electricity production and supply, agricultural products processing, metallurgy and food and beverages are the major industries in the city.
