Zhangye is located in the western part of the Gansu Province. Transportation is convenient. Highways and railways run through the city, connecting major cities, such as Lanzhou, Shanghai and Urumqi. Zhangye Ganzhou Airport, which is 24 km from the city's downtown, is being expanded to increase the capacity.
Agriculture is essential to Zhangye, accounting for 25% of the GDP in 2015. Zhangye is a major production base of grain and livestock. Major products include wheat, corn, dates, apples, pears, garlic and honey.
Zhangye is also rich in minerals, such as coal, gypsum, clay, brick, copper, iron, zinc and tungsten, ranking first among all prefecture level cities.
In 2015, the industry sector accounted for 20% of the GDP. Due to the abundant resources in mineral, pillar industries include electricity, metallurgy and chemicals.
