Enquiry: How Should a Foreigner Apply for a China Work Permit?
As of 1 April 2017, China standardised the application procedure for work permits for foreigners. In line with this, any foreigner wishing to come to China to work must first obtain the Notification Letter of Foreigner’s Work Permit and the Foreigner’s Work Permit card from the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs. An application can then be made to the visa office for a visa and residence permit.
Under the terms of the new points-based work permit system, all foreigners applying to work in China are divided into one of three categories – High-level Talent (Category A: no quota), Professional Personnel (Category B: number to be determined by market demand) and Other Foreigners (Category C: number subject to regulations relevant to the particular sector). Individual applicants are assigned to a particular category using the points system outlined in the Classification Criteria for Foreigners Working in China.
