China Commits to Completing Next-Generation Internet Upgrade by 2020

New guidelines with regard to accelerating and expanding the Internet+ Advanced Manufacturing programme, while further prioritising the overall development of the industrial applications of the internet, have been adopted by the State Council following an Executive Meeting on 30 October. Overall, the guidelines seek to give renewed impetus to the transformation and upgrade of the real economy through supply-side restructuring and the accelerated development of the industrial internet. In the latter case, this will entail enhanced alignment with the developmental strategies of the Made in China 2025 and internet+ initiatives, with a view to ensuring that next-generation information technology systems are comprehensively integrated with the overall manufacturing base.

In terms of timelines, it was agreed that 2020 was the target deadline for completing an industry-wide upgrade to a next-generation internet system with sufficient capacity to meet the needs of the advanced manufacturing sector. In order to help facilitate this, SMEs will be given access to faster internet connections, while all related fees will be reduced.

In addition, greater guidance will be given with regard to improving the network security of individual enterprises. At the same time, enhanced efforts will be made to develop and commercialise several key generic technologies, including industrial wireless systems and low-power wide-area network products. There will also be greater emphasis on developing the most promising frontier technologies, including artificial intelligence and big data, while remaining committed to the national drive to adopt and refine smart and green systems in the advanced manufacturing sector.
