China Imposes Retaliatory Tariff Hikes on 128 US Import Categories
In a move to mitigate the economic loss expected as a consequence of the higher US import tariffs imposed on Chinese iron, steel and aluminium products, the Customs Tariff Commission of the Chinese State Council has suspended tariff concessions on 128 US import categories.
In more specific terms, tariff concessions on 120 imported US products (including fruit and certain metal items) have been suspended. This has resulted in an additional import duty of 15% being imposed on all such items on top of the previously applicable tariff.
In the case of a further eight imported US products (including pork, pork products and aluminium scrap), the previously applying tariff concessions have again been suspended. This has resulted in an additional import duty of 25% being imposed on all such items on top of the previously applicable tariff.
The above measures came into effect as of 2 April 2018.
