During the course of a state visit to China (13-17 May 2017) by the Cambodian Prime Minister, both sides spoke highly of the benefits of the existing co-operation in trade and investment between the two countries and agreed to accelerate the further alignment of their development strategies. In particular, they committed to implementing the Outline of the Bilateral Co-operation Plan to Jointly Build the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, an agreement signed during the course of the visit. Both sides also reaffirmed the importance of a number of priority projects relating to production capacity and investment co-operation, currently scheduled to deliver a bilateral trade volume of US$6 billion by 2020. At the same time, China confirmed its intention to continue to provide assistance to Cambodia with regard to its economic development and the improvement of overall living standards. China would continue to support Chinese enterprises in the development of a number of high priority projects, including the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville expressway and the new airport in Siem Reap, as well as the joint development of the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone.
