China-Uruguay Joint Statement on Establishing a Strategic Partnership

At the invitation of President Xi Jinping, Tabaré Vazquez, the President of Uruguay paid a state visit to China from 12 to 20 October 2016. During the course of his stay, President Vazquez expressed Uruguay’s support for the Belt and Road Initiative and indicated a willingness to co-operate in related areas. Both sides agreed to jointly encourage the exploration of co-operative possibilities in the areas of industrial investment, shipping and port infrastructure construction, and logistics. Both sides also committed to maximise the potential of Uruguay’s geographic location as a logistics hub in the southern Atlantic to in order to advance the linking of Chinese and Uruguayan industrial chains and to promote trade in goods and services.
