During the state visit to China (30 August-1 September 2017) by Emomali Rahmon, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, agreement was reached with regard to greater co-operation on both China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Tajikistan’s own national strategy, which outlines the proposed development of the country up until 2030. Among the actions agreed was a move to accept local currency in settlement of bilateral trade transactions and to adopt effective measures, in line with prevailing local legislation, to protect the personal and property safety of individual citizens and corporations in one another’s country on a reciprocal basis, including guaranteeing their legitimate rights. In addition, the two countries also committed to encouraging and supporting local departments and enterprises who were considering participating in exhibitions, trade fairs or other trade and investment promotional activities in each other’s country. Discussions were concluded with an acknowledgement of the importance of strengthening future customs co-operation.
