Joint Statement on the Establishment of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Between China and Iran
China and Iran have agreed to establish a comprehensive strategic partnership. In a statement issued in Tehran on 23 January 2016, the two countries announced plans to commit to a 25-year comprehensive co-operation agreement.
The announcement coincided with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two countries on the joint promotion of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. At the same time, a second MOU - between China’s National Development and Reform Commission and Iran’s Ministry of Industry, Mines and Trade – relating to the expansion of industrial, mineral and investment co-operation also came into effect. Overall, the two agreements will see both sides seek to expand mutual investment and co-operation in a number of fields, including communication, transportation, railways, ports, energy, trade and services.
With specific regard to the MOU between China’s Ministry of Commerce and Iran’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance, both parties have undertaken to deepen co-operation in a number of economic areas, including, banking, finance, mining, communications, aerospace, manufacturing, express railway systems, agriculture, water conservation, food security, combating desertification, sea water desalination, the peaceful use of nuclear energy and renewable energy.
