Kunming Confirms Commitment to Supporting the Belt and Road Initiative and to Servicing South and South East Asia
On 18 June 2016, the Kunming City Party Committee Standing Committee confirmed the city’s key role as a hub and essential pillar of the Belt and Road Initiative and the Yangtze Economic Belt development strategy. It was also designated as a key access point for South and Southeast Asia, and as a core zone for serving both regions. The subsequent Implementation Opinions put forward committed Kunming to supporting China’s national strategies, while also continuing to open up on both the internal and external fronts. Every effort will also be made to accelerate the pace of expanding major access routes, clustering leading industries, streamlining customs clearance and establishing integrated platforms. This is in a bid to strengthen the city’s role within South Asia and Southeast Asia, especially in areas related to the economy, trade, financial services and innovation. Overall, this will reinforce Kunming’s role as an international hub city in the region, with a particular emphasis on its service commitments to South and Southeast Asia.
